Sometimes I wonder whether I am still too much of a kid. Too much of a kid to start working. During my induction, I felt a difference in people and ways. The same people who were getting drunk and wasted in college a few days ago had suddenly shifted to being competitive and yet team-spirited. Ways and methods had changed. We were being constantly judged for things we did, no matter where and when. People were competing for the attention and applause of the higher up(s). Jeering behind the back of the same person they extolled in various speeches was a common thing.
Being a person who says what she thinks, I found it different and also difficult. I went up to this Robert Pattinson look alike and told him "You are hot" - later I wondered if I shouldn't have done that. I had also said something "controversial" in a contest where I was asked what I'd want to do if I turned into a boy the next day.
"I have done everything that a guy must have done in his life"
This was in front of directors and heads of the company. Later on people said that I was very bold out there.
I don't know why it has to be different. We all know that we will be working for most of the rest of our life. We all know that we will be at the office for most of our waking hours. Bottom line, office is like a second home. Then how come people don't have fun while working?
I have been assigned a partner and she like that girl from school who took permission to miss sports and games classes so that she can finish her homework due next week! She is constantly of the opinion that "They are not paying us to have fun". But, why am I working if I don't enjoy it? Why are people working 24*7 to get more money when they don't have any time to enjoy it?
People who want to grow think that money is the solution to all their problems. But, having seen a workaholic dad who worked most of his life while sacrificing many aspects of his personal and family life to save or earn money, I think money does not matter after a point.
No matter how much I work and how much I progress, when I am 60 and retiring, my bank balance will still be only good enough to make ends meet. Colleagues would have forgotten me and got back to their work even before I say "Thank You". Through out my work life, I would prefer having a lot of fun and a lot of great memories to spend in idle nostalgia when I am old and jobless.
At that time, what matters is how many friends I made. Then, the only people who will be there for me, will be my family.
Losing all of the people who matter, to work my way up the corporate ladder is not a price I am willing to pay.

Ps: I am BACK - - Thanks everyone for waiting and also for the good wishes :D

your true! we earn money to have fun and enjoy! But we earn lots of money and sit in office and we never have time to spend it to have fun. I'm glad that you are different!
ReplyDelete"You work to live, not live to work". Not many people realize that.
ReplyDeleteI guess they realize that after a certain period of time, its good that you are so level headed and knows what she wants!!
Great to have you back Nicky! I was wondering where you had disappeared.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. Some of us get so caught up with work that we forget why are working in the first place - to be able to live a happy life. And the irony is we work so much that we end up leading a miserable life.
The key is - balance.
That was a perfect post. A perfect realization of ones happiness and where it lies.
ReplyDeleteGreat writing. Keep writing :)
good to see you back.
ReplyDeleteyes u r true!!! we will be working for rest of our life !!!
Yes, try to have fun while working, otherwise you cannot live.
ReplyDelete"Through out my work life, I would prefer having a lot of fun and a lot of great memories to spend in idle nostalgia when I am old and jobless."..Very well said. Believe me, it might be difficult to stick to in the short run, but i firmly believe that this is the mantra for a happy life in the long run.
ReplyDeleteHello there, just came across your blog.. and I intend to follow it! Great posts, bitch on! ;)
ReplyDeleteHere's my two cents -
ReplyDelete1.Capitalism and fairness don't go together.
2.Life is not ideal - get used to it - the earlier the better.
This is NOT meant as a discouragement but more of a watch-it statement.most people in the corporate world have faced this some time or the other.Whether you have fun at work - actually largely depends on you - if you can manage your work schedule, keep your career on fast track ,contribute over and beyond the call of duty, manage upwards superbly, package your words carefully...sure you can have all the fun you want to.
office is a simple place - just like everywhere else - there are good people, bad people, confused people, intelligent people, jerk people, sit there and smirk people,I-know-it-all people....I guess you get the point.
A lot of the early work you do will also shape your personality.Which is why some people tend to take it a bit more seriously,I guess the bottom line is - the earlier you know what you want to be - where you want to go - the easier it will be the to determine how much fun you can have along the way.
Cheers
GB
PS - I am a guy who sits on the other side of the interview table. !
Exactly...you can have fun for sure...but then u need to ensure that you play your cards right. I used to have fun too and still do lot of masti in office...but then I am forced to be politically correct and very goody goody types sometimes. It's a hard fact...but the earlier u understand...the smoother would be your journey of life.
ReplyDeleteI haven't succeeded with the politically correctness. I have already failed to keep myself away from guys :P . Already hit on one - with a seemingly positive result till we broke up within 5 days of our hooking up :D
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I guess being politically correct is not my 'thang'. So its kinda okay as long as I do the right things!
